Become a Graphic Designer
If you have a creative streak in you, you may be interested in training to become a graphic designer. This is a rewarding career and there are lots of jobs in the industry available in South Africa. At one time it was difficult to find training to get a foothold in this industry in the country, but thankfully things have now changed. So, if you are considering becoming a graphic designer, getting involved with different projects each day, now is the time to find out more about this job.
What does a graphic designer do?
A graphic designer is responsible for providing a wide range of services involving design. One day they could be creating a new design for a business card, while the next they might be designing a new website. Other common tasks include creating brochures and catalogues, as well as designing posters and logos. As you can see, a graphic designer will develop their skills to be used in lots of different areas.
A graphic designer should also have an eye for good design and for form and colour. A creative streak is an absolute must, while a sense of marketing will also come in useful. This is because a new logo or design must be aimed at a particular audience. Graphic design is a lot harder than it may at first seem!
Graphic Designer Training
What training is required to become a graphic designer?
Unlike some jobs where training is necessary in order to start along the career path (think of a doctor or train driver for example), training is not 100% essential to become a graphic designer.
However with that said, it is a very good idea to get proper training. This is particularly true if you want to apply for jobs in creative agencies or graphic design studios. These positions normally ask for some degree of training or experience, so you must be able to demonstrate you have the knowledge and experience they require.
You can take anything from a short course in graphic design to a full degree course. Needless to say, a degree is the best option since you will likely be competing against other graphic designers who are similarly qualified.
Graphic Designer Jobs
What jobs are available as a graphic designer and what do they entail?
You will come across junior positions at various companies – typically the larger ones – and these can be good if you are just getting started in the industry. Once you gain experience you can search for graphic designer positions that assume you have had experience in the industry, rather than being fresh out of training.
Many graphic designers make the decision to go freelance too, and work for themselves. In this position you can either go solo or you can eventually consider starting your own studio with your own premises and have other graphic designers working with you and for you.
As you can see, there are plenty of opportunities in this career that could lead to a very bright and creative future.
