5 Things You Didn’t Know About Graphic Design CareersGraphic design is an industry that is certainly growing; most designers will tell you that this career choice allows them freedom to work on their own ideas, as well as getting to work with a variety of customers from all parts of the world. But there are a few things that you didn’t know about graphic design careers, and here they are:

    • The customer might pay the bill, but they are not always right.

Although you are designing what the customer wants, they do not always have the final say. Sometimes you need to create what you think is best for their needs, which is why they came to you in the first place. If you position yourself correctly, you can build a relationship with your customer where they respect your work and trust in your judgement.

    • You don’t have to explain your whole process when presenting your designs.

This is another aspect that many graphic designers do not always realise. Many of them want to explain their reasoning behind why they chose a specific design, but the customer wants the bottom line. Reveal your design first. You can then explain the reasoning, if it is necessary. Customers won’t have a chance to hear the whole explanation before they see a new poster, website, billboard or logo, so you don’t have to open with a long explanation either.

    • You don’t need years of experience to come up with a great design.

Graphic design is a creative field, so if you are creative and innovative, chances are that you will come up with something unique and amazing on your own.

    • Your initial pitch to potential customers is just as important as your portfolio.

It’s not just about your past designs and experience, it’s about how you present yourself to your potential customers. You need to be able to explain your business effectively in a short amount of time, so make sure that you master this skill first, before you approach new leads.

    • Some of the best designers will steal.

At some point, you will find that it is okay to get your inspiration from others, use their ideas as a basis for you to work from. You don’t have to be the one that comes up with brand new ideas every single day of your life. Sometimes you need to follow someone else’s lead and change it in a way that will be inspiring and unique to your customer. Don’t be surprised if you are asked to copy another design at some point in your career; just remember not to blatantly copy someone else’s work – rather use it as inspiration or a basis to work from, and always give credit where it is due.

With these things in mind, you can start your graphic design careers being prepared and ready. It’s a great choice for people who love to create and inspire, and of course enjoy all the other perks that come with being a great and successful graphic designer.
