If you are considering going into the IT industry you’ll want to know about the opportunities that exist for IT jobs in South Africa. The good news is there are plenty of them around and there are many different types as well. You’ll notice that many of them are on offer in and around Cape Town, but other areas such as Johannesburg, Pretoria and Centurion also have opportunities popping up from time to time.
IT Jobs in South Africa
For those interested in finding out what types of IT jobs are on offer, here are some of the ones you will regularly see being advertised. It should be noted that all the positions below have been on offer in various parts of South Africa in recent weeks.
Java is a computer platform and it has become more popular over the years. If you aim to work in this type of job you will develop new programs and uses for Java. You may also see employers advertising for Java programmers for this type of work.
This is a very complex job, although there may be more than one administrator in a larger organisation. Typical duties could include monitoring computer security, handling problems and making backups of the data held on the company’s computers. This is just scratching the surface though – there are many other tasks that can also be done.
Service desk technician
As part of a company’s service desk, you’ll be expected to respond to any problems, questions or queries anyone has regarding the use of their computers or anything associated with them. You’ll also have to find appropriate solutions and deal with all issues and problems that could arise. This is a challenging role that is never the same two days in a row.
Here you’ll have to be familiar with HTML and also commonly with CSS, which will allow you to create and build functioning web pages without errors. You may be asked to maintain the pages as well as creating them in the first place, responding quickly to any issues that may occur.
As the name would suggest, this role entails testing all kinds of software produced by the company you work for. The idea of this is to develop different ways of testing a particular piece of software so you can evaluate whether or not it is working as it should be. You will also be required to report your findings to your superiors.
There are many other IT jobs available too
It’s quite surprising just how many jobs are available in the field of information technology. While some require a lot of prior experience and qualifications, others are easier to get on a ground floor level.
While many IT jobs are available in Cape Town, don’t be too disheartened if you live elsewhere in South Africa. Other areas such as the aforementioned Pretoria and Johannesburg also provide many opportunities for those looking for IT work. Wherever you find large companies and plenty of them, there will typically be more IT opportunities for you to explore.
